Help Shape the Future of Junior and Club Cricket in Guernsey
Guernsey Cricket is inviting the local cricket community to help shape the future of junior and club cricket in the island, with the launch of a new Expression of Interest process.
Junior cricket in Guernsey continues to grow, with increasing numbers of boys and girls being introduced to the game. Guernsey Cricket now wants to explore how stronger, sustainable club structures could help provide young players with more opportunities to play regularly, develop at an appropriate level and enjoy a clearer pathway from junior cricket into the adult game.
At present, much of junior cricket is organised centrally by Guernsey Cricket. While this has supported significant growth, the Expression of Interest will explore how clubs could play a greater role in the future, giving young players a cricketing home and creating a stronger sense of identity, belonging and progression.
Importantly, no final structure has been determined. The process is not intended to present the cricket community with a finished model, but to identify interested parties and begin developing the future structure collaboratively.
Junior cricket at the heart of the future
The ambition is simple: to enable more young people to play more cricket, more often, and encourage them to remain involved in the game for longer.
As participation continues to increase, Guernsey will need more teams, coaches, volunteers, officials, facilities and competitive opportunities, alongside a clearer pathway between introductory cricket, junior competition and the adult game.
Over time, stronger club structures could see clubs increasingly take responsibility for their own junior teams, coaching, volunteers and player development, supported by Guernsey Cricket.
Ultimately, this could create club pathways extending from introductory and junior cricket through to senior men's and women's cricket.
Guernsey Cricket would continue to play an important role in supporting clubs, developing coaches and officials, coordinating competitions and providing representative and performance pathways. The intention is not to withdraw from junior development, but to create a structure in which responsibility for growing and sustaining the game can increasingly be shared.
Who do we want to hear from?
At this stage, Guernsey Cricket is not prescribing a particular number of clubs or a final competition structure.
Expressions of Interest are welcomed from:
existing cricket teams or organisations interested in developing into broader clubs;
individuals or groups interested in establishing a new club;
people interested specifically in developing junior or girls' cricket;
coaches, officials, administrators and volunteers who would like to become involved; and
other organisations or potential partners interested in supporting junior and community cricket.
Following the Expression of Interest process, Guernsey Cricket will meet with interested parties to discuss ideas, opportunities and practical requirements.
These conversations will help determine areas including the appropriate number and structure of clubs, junior age groups and competitions, the relationship between junior and adult teams, coaching and volunteer requirements, facilities and playing opportunities, and the support clubs would require from Guernsey Cricket. Any transition would be phased and developed in consultation with those involved.
