In 2018 both islands were preparing for qualification for the ICC T20 World Cup to be held in Australia in 2020, starting with a Regional Qualifier in the Netherlands at the end of August. The expanded competition would see 18 teams travel to the Netherlands to play across 3 groups of 6 teams each.

Given this competition would clash with the traditional date for the Inter Insular Trophy (50 overs) and to provide the appropriate preparation for the shorter format competition the Boards of both islands agreed a 'best of 3' match T20 format for the Inter Insular. To avoid confusion with the older format the new matches would be played for the Inter Insular Cup.

Guernsey thus duly travelled over to play the 'auld' enemy at Farmers.

In 2019, again supported by InfrasoftTech, who came on board in 2018 as sponsor for the inaugural series the format was replicated and for the first time recognised by ICC as full T20 Internationals. A two year gap followed in 2020/21 but in 2022 under a rebranded name the matches were back!

Player statistics are thus now separated between the two formats of the Inter Insular competitions.
