Guernsey gives Europe’s rising cricketers a stage of their own

For eight days in July, Guernsey became the centre of European youth cricket as some of the continent’s most promising young players competed in the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Europe Division 2 Qualifier.

Seven visiting national sides: Belgium, France, Germany, Isle of Man, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland, joined hosts Guernsey for a tournament that brought international cricket to grounds across the island and provided young players with an important opportunity to take the next step on the pathway towards the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Several weeks on from the final ball being bowled, the significance of hosting the tournament extends well beyond the results.

The competition demonstrated both the continuing growth of cricket across Europe and Guernsey’s ability to provide the facilities, organisation and support required to stage an ICC international tournament.

For some of the competing nations, established domestic leagues and player pathways provide a strong foundation for their young cricketers. Others are developing rapidly, driven by local clubs, volunteer coaches and growing cricketing communities.

Bringing those nations together provided an important opportunity for young players to experience international tournament cricket, test themselves against different styles of opposition and play in conditions and facilities they may not regularly encounter.

Stefano Pieri, Team Manager at Federazione Cricket Italiana, said:

“Representing Italy at this level is a very special experience for our Under-19 players. As one of Europe's developing cricket nations, opportunities to compete in ICC qualification tournaments are invaluable, providing our young players with exposure to a higher standard of cricket, different playing conditions and the chance to measure themselves against some of the best emerging talent in the region.

“From a cricketing perspective, I was genuinely impressed by the standard of the facilities in Guernsey. Having travelled extensively throughout Associate cricket, I can confidently say that the KGV ground ranks among the finest venues at this level. The quality of the playing surface, the excellent outfields and the overall presentation of the grounds reflected the pride that Guernsey Cricket takes in its facilities.

“For many of our players, this was the first time they had experienced playing on outfields and wickets of this quality. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to develop their game in professional surroundings and to appreciate the standards required at international level.”

Italy ultimately emerged as tournament winners, defeating Sweden by nine wickets in the final. Both nations progressed to the next stage of qualification on the pathway towards the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2028.

There was also plenty for the hosts to celebrate.

Guernsey went through the group stage unbeaten before losing to Sweden in the semi-final. The island side responded strongly, defeating Germany by 85 runs in the third-place play-off to finish the tournament on a positive note.

For Guernsey Cricket, however, hosting the tournament was about considerably more than the performance of the home side.

The event gave local players the opportunity to experience a multi-nation ICC tournament on home soil, while also bringing players, coaches, officials, families and supporters from across Europe to the island.

Richard Headington, Chief Operating Officer at Guernsey Cricket, said:

“Looking back on the tournament, I think Guernsey can be extremely proud of what was achieved. For our young players, the opportunity to compete against international opposition on home soil was invaluable. They experienced different styles of cricket, the pressures of tournament competition and the standards required to progress at international level. But the benefits went much wider than our own squad. We welcomed seven visiting nations to Guernsey and were able to showcase not only the quality of our cricket facilities, but the island itself.

“Stefano’s comments about the standard of KGV and our other grounds are particularly pleasing. We know how much work goes into preparing facilities for a tournament of this scale, and that recognition is a tremendous credit to our grounds teams and everyone who helped deliver the event. It was also fantastic to see so many volunteers, officials, clubs and members of the wider cricket community come together to support the tournament. Events like this simply could not happen without them.

Hosting ICC tournaments of this nature is something we want to continue to do. They provide tremendous development opportunities for our players, strengthen Guernsey’s position within European cricket and bring visiting teams, officials and supporters to the island.”

The impact of the tournament was not confined to the cricket grounds.

During their stay, visiting teams and supporters had the opportunity to experience Guernsey beyond cricket, providing an additional benefit to the island from staging an international sporting event.

For many of the young players, Guernsey was somewhere they had never visited before. They returned home having experienced not only international competition, but an island that provided the stage on which an important part of their cricketing journey could unfold.

The kit bags that lined Guernsey’s boundaries during those eight days in July have since been packed away and carried home across Europe.

What remains is the experience gained by the young cricketers who competed, the memories created for those involved and further evidence that a small island can provide a significant stage for the development of European cricket.
