Guernsey’s young cricketers have plenty to be proud of after securing an impressive third-place finish at the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Europe Division 2 Qualifier, hosted in Guernsey.

The Guernsey Under-19s, sponsored by Smarter Payments, rounded off their tournament with an 85-run victory over Germany in the third-place play-off at Port Soif on Thursday 30 July.
It capped an excellent campaign for the hosts, who won four of their five matches, with their only defeat coming against eventual runners-up Sweden in the semi-final.
Italy went on to win the tournament, defeating Sweden by nine wickets in the final. Both teams have progressed to the next stage of qualification for the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, which will be held in 2028.
Guernsey Cricket Chief Operating Officer Richard Headington praised the squad following their performance.
“This tournament showcased the fantastic quality of players, coaches and facilities in Guernsey. The team managed to handle the pressure of hosting whilst playing top-level cricket, and they should come away with their heads held high.
This tournament brought some of Europe’s top Under-19 cricket talent to the island, and the Guernsey team should feel proud to have been part of that group. I have no doubt this experience will live long in the memory of these players, who all have bright futures ahead in the sport.
Running such a well-coordinated event would not have been possible without the support of our hard-working volunteers, motivated colleagues at Guernsey Cricket and our Under-19 team sponsors, Smarter Payments.”
Across the five-day tournament, Guernsey welcomed teams from Sweden, the Isle of Man, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and France, with 20 matches played across the island.
