Jersey claimed its first European Division 2 title yesterday after it defeated tournament host Guernsey in a thrilling title decider at King George V Cricket Ground.
Jersey won the toss and captain Matthew Hague put his team in to bat. After a shakey start Jersey were on 20-2 when batsman number 4, Ryan Driver, took to the crease, closely followed by skipper Hague on 42-3.
This was the turning point for Guernsey as the pair forged a 109 run partnership. Hague contributed 35 runs before being bowled by Jeremy Frith, whilst Driver stayed in for the remainder of his team's overs climbing his way to 113 not out.
Jersey finished up on 218 for 5 wickets from 50 overs.
The home side's reply got off to a strong start as openers Lee Savident and Matthew Oliver posted a partnership of 79 at which point Oliver was out caught by Anthony Kay from Chris Jones' bowling.
Savident continued scoring with number 3 batsman Jeremy Frith and the pair took the score up to 160-2. Victory seemed inevitable.
However, things took a turn at this point when Frith was caught and bowled by Samuel Dewhurst. The Guernsey middle order then suffered a catastrophic collapse as batsman came to the crease and then left minutes later.
Savident continued to chip away at the total, but he was run out by Jonathan Gough on 98 leaving Guernsey on 209-5. With only 10 runs to get the Guernsey tail continued to come to the crease and leave as the number 7, 8 and 9 batsmen could not make more than 1 run between them.
In a thrilling final over, the home side fell agonisingly just one run short of the target and a jubilent Jersey took home the trophy.
Elsewhere Gibraltar took victory from Germany by 5 wickets in the 3rd place place off and France defeated Croatia by 6 wickets to take fifth place.
