GUERNSEY WINS OVER 40s INTER INSULAR

Guernsey won by 44 runs

A fine opening partnership of 122 by Mark Clapham and Peter Vidamour laid the foundations for Guernsey's Over-40s retaining the inter-insular trophy after skipper Mark Renouf won the toss and elected to bat at Grainville. Vidamour fell first for 61 off 66 balls, stumped trying to hit off-spinner Andy Brown into the bowls centre, while Clapham was joined by Richard Veillard to add a further 60 before Clapham chipped Nigel Greenwood to midwicket for an excellent 79 off 107 balls.

Veillard fell shortly afterwards for a run-a-ball 39, and the rest of the order chipped in with useful runs to take Guernsey to a very challenging score of 271. Jersey skipper Ward Jenner was the pick of the Jersey bowlers with 3 for 43.

Guernsey's new ball attack of Mark Culverwell and Mark Renouf restricted Jersey to just 30 off the first 10 overs, but more importantly picked up the wickets of Stuart Robson and Jenner, the latter falling to a brute of a lifting delivery from Culverwell.

Jenner's dismissal brought Mark Tribe to the wicket and Tribe proceeded to take charge with a flurry of boundaries. With useful partnerships of 30s and 40s with Jason Carpenter and Paul Le Bihan, Tribe threatened to take the game to the wire even as Guernsey kept chipping in with wickets to break the partnerships. Tribe finally fell, as the seventh wicket, to a skied caught and bowled to Steve Birkett for a superb 109 off just 105 balls, including four sixes. Birkett was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 49, while Mike Savage and Renouf also bowled very tightly economically as Jersey fell short by 44 runs with just over 4 overs remaining to retain the trophy.
