The search has started for Guernsey’s future Island players with the introduction of Under 7 and Under 9 Leagues. The Guernsey Cricket Board Leagues will run on a Tuesday evening for the Under 9s (starts 3 May) and Monday evenings for the Under 7s (starts 16 May). These Leagues are an integral part of the GCB’s School Cricket Programme which this year, for the first time, will be supported by Appleby.
The support from Appleby coincides with their opening of a new office in Guernsey. A unique feature of these leagues is that each team has adopted one of Appleby’s 12 world wide offices, with each team playing in a different coloured t-shirt.
Community Cricket Coach, David Hooper said, “After the winter’s coaching, learning to play cricket in game situations is vital in the young player’s development.”
Over 100 children are expected to play in the leagues using a pairs cricket format where each partnership faces 5 overs and everyone bowls enabling maximum participation.
Development Manager, Jason Shambrook said, “We are very grateful to Appleby for their support which allows us to make the children’s first experience of cricket both positive and exciting.”
Simon Worsey, Appleby’s Head of Marketing for Jersey added, “We are very pleased to continue to partner with Guernsey Cricket Board on this fantastic initiative. It is very rewarding to see so many young people working together in a fun environment, which allows them to build their team and cricketing skills.”
The leagues are open to all pupils in school years 1 to 4. For more information please contact David Hooper on 01481 210200 or via email davidhooper@guernseycricket.com.
