GBG Magazine Christmas Charity Present Giveaway !

Guernsey’s Senior Squad have had a memorable and successful year and been fortunate to travel to some marvellous places to play cricket in 2011.

As Christmas approaches it has been time to take stock of the year and also acknowledge the fortunate position they have been in keeping fit and healthy and, able to enjoy their sport to the full. Unfortunately many are not as lucky so to acknowledge the great community spirit at the heart of local cricket, Guernsey Cricket sought a way to give the children in our island a helping hand.

A chance conversation with Sue Markham at GBG Magazine soon grew into a full blown idea and ‘Christmas Charity Present Giveaway’ was born.

Twelve players with twelve presents each supported by a local company produced a photoshoot  with Christmas cheer. The presents were then handed over to the PEH Children’s Ward. In addition a donation of £1200 is to be made to Young People Guernsey who seek to provide a one stop centre for youths in Guernsey in association with Barnardos next year.

Mark Latter GCB Chief Executive said, “we are always conscious of the fantastic opportunities afforded the players in our systems so are always looking for ways to put something back. When this idea was mooted with Sue it was a clear winner and all involved have been delighted to be a part of it. Being able to donate the presents to the PEH Children’s Ward is fantastic and, hopefully will make the stay of those who have to go into hospital just that little bit more bearable. We are indebted to those local companies who supported the initiative without their sponsorship this wouldn’t of been possible!”

SPONSORS WERE;

BDO, HISCOX, OGIER, TRAVEL SOLUTIONS, INSURANCE CORPORATION, MOURANT OZANNES, CENKOS, HAIRTEK, LOUVRE GROUP, STORMFORCE FITNESS AND INVESTEC SPECIALIST PRIVATE BANK - THANKS SO MUCH GUYS !!!

The HSSD’s Paediatric Clinical Lead, Jeanette Cooper, was there to receive the gifts – plus the HSSD Minister, Deputy Hunter Adam.

 “Doctors and nurses caring for sick children recognise that play is an important part of a child’s treatment and so we use toys and games not only help to reduce the child’s stress and provide them with entertainment, but also to support them in coming to terms with being in hospital,” said Paediatric Clinical Lead, Jeanette Cooper.

“On behalf of the nursing staff and the children admitted onto Frossard Ward, I would like to thank the Guernsey cricket team and GBG Magazine for their kindness, which is greatly appreciated.” Stated Deputy Hunter Adam

Sue Markham from Young People Guernsey said: We at YPG are incredibly grateful: both to the cricketers for this initiative – and to the Guernsey businesses that have got behind them and, as always, decided to support the more vulnerable members of our community.  This has been an amazing year for YPG: we have raised sufficient funds to confirm that we are commissioning Barnardo’s to open our information, guidance and advice centre for young teenagers in 2012. We will be working hard to ensure the sustainability of our project, and the generosity of the cricketers and local companies has brought that viability a little closer. Whilst the words seem inadequate, we sincerely offer them our very heartfelt thanks.”

Members of the Guernsey Senior Squad took the presents to the Children’s Ward on 6th December to present them to the staff and families there.
